SRK Says...
On Marriage
It’s nice to be married. You know you come back home from twenty thousand people who are screaming and shouting for you and than you come back to your wife… I think is a great leveler.
On Gauri
I was eighteen and she was fourteen when we met. What I liked about her was that I didn’t find it as difficult as I thought talking to a girl.
On Religion
Children should know about the value of God. Whether is a Hindu god or other Muslim god. So next to Ganeshji Laxmiji we have the Holy Kuran in our house.
On Parents
My Father was very sweet, soft spoken man.
He was the youngest freedom fighter for India actually. My mother was the opposite. She was outgoing and had a very attractive personality. She said I was like Dilip Kumar.
At Home
There are some unsaid rules. I will not make a phone call once I'm in the house. So you'll always see me making a phone call from the bathroom….. I close the door and then talk
On Mumbai
I think it's the greatest city in the world. It’s very important to my life and to me. I'll always be thankful that Mumbai has given me a family, and actually Mumbai has given me a life.
On Acting
For me, acting is very spiritual. It combines as sorts of soulful, religious and spiritual things that people do.
On time off
I don’t get excited going out but all my friends make fun that I keep saying that but I shop the most. I keep buying gadgets and stuff and I call them my “utterly useless shopping”.
On fans photographing
The only time I find people invasive is when I am eating. When I’m eating I don’t like people looking at me.
On time
I think time passes by very, very fast. I don’t ever have time to grow old. It’s so fast. I have this feeling that I am running a few days late in life.
Public persona
There has to be now a public face very clearly. And that public face is always smiling. And I’m tired. And I’m sometimes in a bad mood. But I cannot pass that onto people.

Milestones in Shah Rukh Khan's chequered career......
FAUJI (1988) “It was the first time I saw the smiles I could bring to the faces of people I met on the streets…” reminisces SRK who set hearts aflutter and became an “almost celebrity” playing Abhimanyu Roy in Colonel Kapoor’s true-to-life serial on our armed forces. DEEWANA (1992) “I liked the characters in Deewana and Chamatkar a lot because they were essentially simple folk…” maintains SRK as he rewinds to the Rishi Kapoor-Divya Bharati starrer that earned him his first award-for Best Debut. BAAZIGAR (1993), DARR-A LOVE STORY (1993) & ANJAAM (1994) “The Vicky of Baazigar was a psychopath-irrational, illogical and abnormal. He doesn’t kill for his country or a system gone wrong. He doesn’t kill for love or even revenge but for himself. He was completely insane and inhuman. The killer in Darr was a loser who took his loss personally and turned vicious. You pity him, sympathise, even empathise with him. Anjaam, the first negative role I’d signed, was a very morbid film but the killer I played was more human than Vicky. A spoilt, jealous, slightly demented rich boy. Rahul Rawali wanted the character to come as a surprise but after Baazigar and Darr there was nothing new to him…” SRK analyses his trend-setting troika of ‘bad man’ roles. Baazigar fetched him his first Best Actor Award KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA (1994) “People say I had negative roles in Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam but I think KHKN was my first anti hero film. Sunil was a failure… He flunked exams, cheated and even lost the girl. Yet, I felt close to him. I could identify with almost every shot, every emotion, which wasn’t a good thing because the scene where I see Deepak Tijori kissing Suchitra Krishnamoorthy shook me so much (because I kept seeing Gauri’s face in Anna) that I just ran away. It was a close-up and just ran away from the camera…” confesses SRK who liked that film so badly he even distributed it. He bagged the Critics Choice Award for a straight-from-the-heart performance. DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE (1995) “Raj and Simran’s love story reminded me of the time I was courting Gauri. We had our share of family problems too. But eventually I was able to take my dulhania with her family’s blessings. Raj was a dilwala with a heart and I can see him and Simran growing old together. Still very much in love…Still having a lot of fun.” Muses SRK as he reflects on Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut and another award-wining act that changed his image form killer to a lover. DDLJ also made him and Kajol Hindi cinema’s Jodi No. 1. DIL TO PAGAL HAI (1997) “In this film I have to confess that my co-artistes, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor were much better than I was and it was their love that made Rahul memorable...” says Shah Rukh of another Best Actor performance. KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI (1998) “This was the first time I was playing daddy and I know Rahul is the kind of daddy I want to be to Aryan because he reminded me of my dad. The first day I was shooting for the film at Mehboob Studio. I got the news that Gauri was pregnant. I was still shooting for the film when Aryan was born. So I’ve gone through the process of becoming a father myself during the making of KKHH…” SRK on Karan Johan’s directorial debut for which he was once again adjudged Best Actor. PHIR BHI DIL HAI HINDUSTANI (2000), ASOKA (2001), CHALTE CHALTE (2003), MAIN HOON NA (2004) & PAHELI (2005) “My home productions have all been different from the norm in their own way. At the same time they have been enjoyable films. Our aim is to make the kind of cinema we like.” SRK talks of his experiences as a producer. DEVDAS (2002) “Devdas is a very special film in the history of Indian cinema and the chance to interpret it as a person of today’s generation was irresistible…” SRK says of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s award-winning film brought remakes back into vogue. SWADES (2004) “Swades was a film that needed to be made. It was a film about today… A film about ‘Indianness’ …A film about how the educated middle class could help the country…” SRK elaborates on the eye-opening social. VEER-ZAARA (2004) “I’d had enough of Indian films deriding and decimating Pakistan. I knew in my heart that this was not a reflection of true sentiment. We have a shared history that is hard to ignore. Veer-Zaara cut across borders and man-made boundaries. It was about the goodness of love…” SRK waxes eloquent about the film that brought Yash Chopra out of self-imposed hibernation and challenged SRK with the role of a much older man who was a prisoner-of-war. KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA (2006) “From the outside Gauri and I may seem like a happily-married couple but like any two people working or living together, we also have our share of issues. It’s just that we have resolved most of these issues completely,” SRK points explaining how KANK is in no way close to life. DON (2006) “Don is a dream come true. It is my tribute to Amitabh Bachchan. Don is the king of film I grew up on, and today, I feel blessed that I can mouth lines that have become a part of Hindi film folklore like, ‘Don ko pakadna mushkil nahin, namumkin hai…” SRK on the year’s blockbuster. |

Shah Rukh Khan, son of Late Mir Taj Mohammad and Late Fatima Begum, was born on November 2, 1965. He is now the kingpin of Bollywood film industry. He did his schooling from St. Columba's school and has a Masters Degree in Mass Communication from Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi. He married before he got his break in Bollywood. In a profession where commitment towards wives and girlfriends take the backburner, SRK's devotion towards wife Gauri has been lauded. They have a son Aryan and a daughter Suhana. Shah Rukh started his career as an actor with Fauji (1988), a television serial in which gave him instant success. After a couple of TV serials he joined the big league and gave a smashing hit 'Deewana' (1992) with the late Divya Bharati. After that he gave a series of hit films both as a hero and a villain. In 1993 he shot to stardom with two successive villain roles as a paranoid lover in 'Baazigar' and 'Darr'. In 1995, he got another hit 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' which elevated him as one of the most successful actor in Hindi cinema. After DDLJ he got a series of hit movies which include Pardesh (1997), Yes Boss (1997), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Dilse (1998), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Hey Ram (2000), Josh (2000), Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega (2000), Mohabbatein (2000) etc. Shahrukh as one of the ascendants to the Magadha throne in Santosh Sivan's 'Ashoka' (2001) gave a wonderful performance as a romantic, ruthless warrior. Karan Johar's 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' was another movie in the same year in which he was unable to take full advantage of the character. In 2002, he excelled in 'Devdas', which was India's official entry to the 2002 Oscars. Shahrukh is known as a convincing screen lover, and seems to spark equally good performances from his female co-stars, he has good screen chemistry with almost all his heroines. He has been most successful pairing with Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta, in hits such as Chalte Chalte (2003) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). He followed his success in 2004, with memorable performances in 'Veer-Zaara', 'Swades'. Veer-Zaara is an epic tale of love between an Indian man and a Pakistani woman, in which he enacted the umpteenth role as the forlorn lover with ease. Swadesh is a film dealing with a social cause - a foreign returned Indian man's journey through the rural heart of his home land and he gave a genuine performance in this movie. He started a production company 'Dreamz Unlimited' with co-star Juhi and director Aziz Mirza. In 2004 another of his production houses, Red Chillies Entertainment, produced the hit film 'Main Hoon Na' and co-produced 'Kaal' in 2005 with Karan Johar. He also produced and acted in 'Paheli', which was India's official entry to the 2005 Oscars. A noted British filmmaker, Nasreen Munni has produced a two-part documentary on Shahrukh, "The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan". In his personal life he is very simple and frank. He strongly believes in Muslim-Hindu peace, as do many other Bollywood actors. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2005. SRK has a superb drive to top in anything he does and says he is never satisfied with whatever achievements he has made. He is too full of zest to be defeated and live quietly. Even if he ceases to be a super star, this talented personality is sure to explore other avenues to succeed. He will continue to be there on the top. |
